At the last minute I was offered two tickets, I am not particularly a fan, but I love music so I went along with an open mind and thoroughly enjoyed the night. I did not note the songs played and there were a couple I did not know, but the set list is remarkably similar to that given in Shazzacats excellent review of Brighton concert.

Even the chat between songs was the same, we even gave a standing ovation at the same spot! The only noticeable differences were that James same a song about Vietnam that I can not think of right now and Art did not read a second poem. The only disruption we had was an American guy that was shouting out a lot and waving his cigarette lighter at the strangest moments. It was the quietest concert I ever attended, the crowd were so attentive you could here a pin drop even when Art was singing. Anyway, excellent evening and gald I went. A couple of poor quality photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/bluetit/tags/artgarunkel/

Thank you and welcome Daragh! Looks like James is wearing the same vest as he did in Amsterdam.

A great performance by Artie last night.

I think the set list was v similar to Manchester (so I'm cutting and pasting it here - can't swear for the order of songs!!) with one or two changes:

American Tune
Homeward Bound
A Heart In New York
All I Know
Scarborough Fair
Perfect Moment
Someone To Watch Over Me?? (new song played - presume this was it?)
The Boxer
For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
El Condor Pasa
And So It Goes?? Not sure if this was played
but
The Kid
definitely was!

Bright Eyes
Real Emotional Girl
Mrs. Robinson
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Cecilia (w/ James)
Side Of A Hill (James solo)
Kathy’s Song
The Sound Of Silence
Goodnight, My Love

Like other concerts, Art took a little time to get into his stride. Indeed, whereas at his show with Buddy Mondlock and Maia Sharp, his voice verged on the super-natural, I thought in general it was human and fallible throughout (though still light years better than most of what passes for performances these days).

Highlights for me were: All I Know, Perfect Moment, The Boxer, The Kid, Real Emotional Girl, Bridge over Troubled Water, Side of A Hill and Kathy's Song.

I was impressed with James, as the only time I'd seen him perform before was on TV before the US Open Final a few years ago. He got a partial standing ovation (from Bridge Over Troubled Water half the crowd were standing after each song!)

Banter similar, though he did say after one song that the difference between the Irish and other audiences, is that while other audiences sing along as well, the Irish sing along in tune!

He also delivered a quite heartfelt and sincere sounding declaration after the interval that there's nothing quite like a pint of Guinness.

He changed the Joe DiMaggio line in Mrs Robinson - however, the crowd were singing along so hard at this point, that it was hard to hear whether it was George Best that he substituted or not - I presume so.

I did not enjoy the venue at all though. I don't know where the previous poster was sitting, but we did not enjoy the serene quiet that he experienced. Vicar St allows you to bring your drinks into the venue, and drinks were being clinked, people chatting and giggling more as the concert went on - the Olympia was much better last time.

Also, the scourge that is mobile phones appeared more than once, most appallingly so when some a$$hole was texting and chatting with his partner during the start of Bridge Over Troubled Water! Of all songs!

However, a guy nearby told him that unless it was an emergency to stop; the offender then went over to have a row with the complainant, but thankfully a bouncer came along and sat glaring at the texter.

Overall, the performance was not quite to the dizzy heights of the Everything Waits to be Noticed tour, but it was still a wonderful night, but I hope if he comes again that it's back to the Olympia - I'd be reluctant to go to Vicar St again for any artist.

Thanks for letting us know about Dublin. Being originally from ireland I wish I could have been there. Looks like you had problems there too with the audience. What is wrong with people these days? In Brighton we has some idiot making a racket too It was also at the start of Bridge Over Troubled Water. It is so disrespectful to Art whio gives his all in his performances. It makes me so angry when people can't just behave themselves and show courtesy to a great artist. Having said that, apart from that one nutter, the audience were wonderful in Brighton and I believe Art appreciated everyone up on their feet to show how much we enjoyed his songs.

I am sory Barrera experienced a noisy crowd, I was in Balcony F looking down on the stage from the left and had a perfect view of the stage and the crowd seated at the the little tables. I did not experience or see any disruption at all apart from the guy I mentioned already. As I said it was the queitest concert I was ever at, in fairness, it is not the type of concert I usually go to.

Anyway I have uploaded a short video clip from the Sound of Silence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kihOprukXTE It is short, but the sound is fairly ok. Enjoy.

If Art comes back to Dublin I will be queueing for tickets!

Daragh, thanks so much for that: Sounds of Silence is one of my most beloved songs!

Barrera: Hmm, Art must be getting a bit tired. I saw him last week in Birmingham and was almost wishing he'd hit a flat note or something, just so I'd know he was really human!

Vicar Street is not a great venue ... Olympia was better. But at least it was intimate. It's strange seeing those photos, since I was there just last night!

Here's a copy of Marcia's review from another forum.....

He he! Oh Artie gave me a great night. I'm exhausted. He really wore me out. I concentrated very hard so I would remember everything.

Well he sang a load of S&G tunes and a few solo ones. He sang one (think it's a Randy Newman one?) which he said he is crazy about and it has a line that goes something like "here's my heart to break". Well that was really nice and very moving. I think my Dad (who was with me) was getting a bit upset at the end of that.

We can thank Paulie for Artie including 'The Boxer' in his set because Art said that Paul said to him "You don't do 'The Boxer' in your show?" (and impersonated him brilliantly) so now he does! I can just imagine the little dejected face ... anyway -

His son James came out and sang 'On the Side of a Hill' and I was annoyed at some people talking while he was trying to explain where the song came from, I thought that was really mean. He also sang 'Cecilia' with Art and seemed to be enjoying himself. He seems to be quite an earnest guy.

Art was dressed in trousers (or pants as you say in America) made of denim and a blue shirt and black shoes.

When he came out first, he said (and all of this is paraphrased, by the way 'cos I know I'm good, but I'm not that good!! Only joking ...) "I love Ireland, I'm not pandering to you but you've set me up for the first three songs. I never got over stage nerves ..."

He also said something to the effect of "In other countries they sing along. In Ireland they sing in tune". And if you say that in any other country, Art, I'll be very disappointed ... he he he.

He talked about the Old Friends tour, saying they had a "ball" and a lot of laughs backstage.

He said he doesn't live in the past, but I can't remember in what context he was speaking.

After James sang, he said "I'm the proudest Papa in Ireland".

He told the busking "story" and I had to laugh when he said "we never busked in Stephen's Green, but we got around" (St. Stephen's Green is a famous park in Dublin). He joked that he would "bring" his friend Paul Simon with him on chartered flights to Europe and how they used to imagine they were expatriates. and how poverty looks great in retrospect.

He said he's just made a new CD and it takes him forever to get around to doing these things.

He said his five favourite songwriters are Stephen Sondheim, Jimmy Webb, James Taylor, Randy Newman and Paul Simon.

And this was the best bit - he began telling the good old Garfunkel & Simon joke and I said to myself "Well here we go again" and next thing he goes "If you've heard this before, don't stop me" ... have I just been scolded?

After that I got a bit paranoid because he kept coming over to the corner of the stage and seemed to be looking up at me and once he even pointed ... and I'm thinking "No, he couldn't possibly know I'm here, how could he?". Aaaahhh! I didn't mean to stop you in Oslo Artie, honest - I didn't think you even heard me ... I said it very quietly and I was trying to help you remember ...

He also told the story about wanting to slight alter the words of "Mrs Robinson" but Paul was very touchy.

He also read one of his poems out and did the song for it. I was quite disappointed that he didn't put his glasses on when he read it ... he he he, you know what I mean guys ...

He blew us kisses and everything ... what else? We had a 20 minute interval in the middle ... is this unusual? He said "Bright Eyes" was popular in every country in the world except his own ... what's the story here?

Well I really can't remember anything else. He looked happy and energetic and his band were very good, got to play a little on their own and were rockin'. Oh, and he mentioned Paul ... 6 times. I enjoyed it

Tira, I am sorry I really wish I had more photos or videos to post but I don't. I have one more of Art and James that is really blurred but I stuck it up for you anyway http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=178669534&size=l

The video clip turned out better than expected, I stood at the back and helf the camera at waste level with my credit card over the LCD at the back to kill the light and twisted my fingers over the little LEDs that light to indicate recording and focus etc!! I did not even know if I was pointing in the right direction, it was just luck I had Art in frame for the whole 64 seconds. If I had known it was coming out ok I might have tried again. Maybe next time.

Yea. Tickets weren't cheap €60 + booing fee €5something. Vicar Street is ok, it is fairly square with a capacity of 1000. For some shows the bars remain open and there are people going back and forward all night, for others like with Art, the bars close and there is a loooong interval so the venue can rake in as much cash as possible.

I was given the tickets as comps. Even if the tickets had been €20 when they went on sale it would not have occurred to me to buy them as I did not think the concert would be up to much, how wrong you can be. I really really enjoyed it and would go back tomorrow.

Daragh,

Thanks for linking those pics and the clip of the concert. I can't help but notice that, in the pics, James looks alot like his dad. I mean, with the vest and the hair and all. Pretty cute, imho, but I can't help wondering if his dad makes him dress like that. Imagine the scene...an evil, psycho Artie molding his young son into an exact reincarnation of himself...am I the only one who finds that idea just a little bit funny? Maybe I'm just weird.

Anyway, it's awesome that you got a clip of SOS! He still sounds great singing it.

yeah I know what you mean - I thought about that too. Would have thought James would come out in torn jeans and a t-shirt, not a waistcoat and slacks!

No you see Artie is performing in my living room this time, so he doesn't have time to do an official show. It's understandable.
