Reply with quote | #201 | Mmmm, I must say, I'm surprised you controlled yourself so well. I thought Paul would have been flat on his back in a second receiving mouth to mouth resuscitation and chest compressions

Why didn't I ask him for a hug? That would have put him right on the floor in a dead faint. Then I could have saved his life with the aforementioned CPR. Damn! My guess is that the kind of music he writes won't make him a star in this day and age, but at least he is getting some recognition that he wrote a good album - I am glad for him. I'm sure that being Paul's son opened some doors, but It takes some courage to try to step out of his Dad's shadow. __________________ Acts of kindness, like rain in a drought, release the spirit with a whoop and a shout- Paul Simon |

I agree. I think the music on the album is a lot better than the some of the crap that's out there today, so he deserves credit for that. Having said that, it's not the kind of album that the younger kids will get so it wont make him famous quickly, if that's what he wants. It looks like it's not ... actually I'm quite surprised he made such an 'easy listening' music album. I wasn't expecting that. I'm not saying I particularly enjoy it myself, bar one or two songs, but it's not really the type of album you would expect someone of his age to be making. It's quite 'safe', if you know what I mean. I am quite surprised at the mildness of it. It wouldn't bowl me over, but as I said, I've heard a lot worse. __________________ There's a dream where the contents are visible, where the poetic champions compose, will you breathe not a word of this secrecy .... |

At the Mercury Lounge the arrangements had a bit of a harder edge. I like the songs either way. I suppose it is "easy listening", but at least it isn't elevator music. The melodies cheer me up. Clearly he couldn't try to be another Paul Simon (as if anyone could)-he had to go in a different direction. You are right that most young people won't go for the album , but I do think he made a good album if not a commercial success. __________________ Acts of kindness, like rain in a drought, release the spirit with a whoop and a shout- Paul Simon |

It is very off the beaten track as regards what his age group are into, but not only that it is very off the beaten track in a surprisingly old-fashioned / uncool way. I'm not putting it down, I'm just quite surprised after the music with Menlo Park ... but I guess he was just their backing guitarist, maybe he was just with the group for experience. I would say the type of music he picked for the album was a tactical decision, although I can't figure out what. It's almost like he's deliberately aiming it at an older generation. I wouldn't say he picked it just because he likes that kind of music. __________________ There's a dream where the contents are visible, where the poetic champions compose, will you breathe not a word of this secrecy .... |

remember the lecture from the music/audiologist-who said that you like what you hear when you are late pre-teen to teen-so Harper was likely hearing a lot of late S&G and graceland Paul-might have stamped him indelibly |

He also listened to a lot of the Byrds "Sweet heart of the Rodeo" which is similar. There were a lot of young people (mostly) at the Mercury lounge -perhaps friends of Harper. Some of his music seems folkey to me. I think many ages like that. It just depends in how much exposure he gets. I think Paul F. was seeing him near Wash DC last night. He seems interested in the production end of things, and was doing that even before this album. He plays the guitar very well and understands production so I imagine he will always have work in the music industry. __________________ Acts of kindness, like rain in a drought, release the spirit with a whoop and a shout- Paul Simon |

They make it sound like his Dad raised him alone and his Mom was out of the picture. That's not true, his Mother didn't move away - she raised him and his Dad only lived a few blocks away ! He saw them both all the time. She may have moved away when he got older but not while he was a child. __________________ There's a dream where the contents are visible, where the poetic champions compose, will you breathe not a word of this secrecy .... |

Did you enjoy Harper's show, Roy? Did you meet anyone from this board there? __________________ Acts of kindness, like rain in a drought, release the spirit with a whoop and a shout- Paul Simon |

Reply with quote | #218 | Nancy, I didn't see anyone from the board at the show. I did get to meet Harper after the show, though. He was very accessible, just hung around at the bar. I really enjoyed the concert. Here's a review from the local "alternative" paper: http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/atoz/2009/11/review_harper_simon_pernikoff_brothers_off_broadwa y_november_19_2009_paul_photos_setlist.php
It was a bit more crowded than the newspaper made it sound although the venue is tiny. Harper's band is really good. I'm not very impressed by his singing but his songwriting is very good. I particularly like "Berkeley Girl" which has such a catchy melody. __________________ "Never criticize the post office - they might just figure out where you live." Les Barker |

Reply with quote | #219 | His voice isn't as good as Paul's for sure, but it is pleasant. I always remember the video where Paul and Harper sing "BINGO" on Sesame Street - he couldn't sing in tune, but , of course, he was only 3 or 4.Sometimes he seems to trying to channel his inner Bob Dylan.I suppose he doesn't want to sound too sweet in a club that attracks a younger rocker crowd. He sounds better on the CD than in person, but I think his changing the songs is interesting from venue to venue. The band seems very good. I like Berkely Girl, too - shades of S and G. As far as I know, he hasn't done "Tennessee" on tour. I really like that song - perhaps my favorite - and think it is nice Harper and Paul wrote it together. I wonder if he feels it is leaning too much on Paul if he plays it. do you have the CD? I like it better the more times I play it. __________________ Acts of kindness, like rain in a drought, release the spirit with a whoop and a shout- Paul Simon |

Yes, I do have the CD and I really like it. I like the Paul contributions though I think it's odd to see a writing credit with Harper, Carrie and Paul. I *really* like the studio version of "Berkeley Girls;" it vaguely reminds me of a lot of things that I like. Parts of it sound sort of like The Kinks "A Well Respected Man" and some of it reminds me of The Byrds circa "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo." I think it's very melodic.... just what Marsha has been waiting for! __________________ "Never criticize the post office - they might just figure out where you live." Les Barker |
