Reply with quote | #1 | The long running - but now defunct - BBC news and current affairs programme 'Nationwide' has recently been revisited in this BBC FOUR programme http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00hd2w7
If you are interested - and it's only brief - Paul and Artie are shown at the end of an interview with Frank Bough. As far as I know it's the only time the pair have ever been 'live' on UK television. __________________ "You cannot now

It is a very short clip though Tira, and I remember the interview as being toe-curlingly embarrassing. Frank Bough told them how much he enjoyed their music especially 'Scarborough Fair' and then asked, "You actually wrote that in Scarborough didn't you?" Paul and Artie replied very diplomatically that it wasn't but you could see them both repressing something of a bemused smile. __________________ "You cannot now

Reply with quote | #4 | Thanks very much Paul. It is very short, just a couple of seconds, at around 44 minutes in.

Yeah, how disappointing !!! Do you remember the Paul Simon one with Terry Wogan - I wish we could see the entire interview. __________________ There's a dream where the contents are visible, where the poetic champions compose, will you breathe not a word of this secrecy .... |

Reply with quote | #8 | I do indeed Marcia. I have heard it said either on this board or by Paul himself, that when a situation becomes boring his natural reaction is to close his eyes and my abiding memory is Paul responding to Terry's questioning from behind shut eyelids for most of the time!! Which was a shame since Terry Wogan has always been a fan and pushed his music to a considerable degree during his long tenure on Radio 2. Also, though the above clip maybe S&G's only 'live' appearance UK tv, Paul has actually appeared live on, of all things, the Saturday morning children's programme 'Saturday Superstore'. __________________ "You cannot now

Reply with quote | #9 | Now PaulS, don't tell me anything else unless you can produce a video !!! How depressing !! I don't know about S&G but Paul was interviewed briefly on the Jools Holland Show a while back and that was live. I have it on video tape so unfortunately I cannot put it on here. Someone posted a short clip of that Terry Wogan interview and he didn't have his eyes closed, in fact I think it was Terry who was falling asleep - as he commented to Paul that he gave one of the longest answers he'd ever heard to a seemingly simple question, so much so that Terry forgot what the question was ! It is true, he really does interview himself !

This programme is on BBC 2 late tonight. It's an hour long programme about an old 'light news' programme and the Paul and Art clip is 7 seconds long. Paul says a few words, along the lines of "Yes, we'll be at Wembley" and Art only gets to open his mouth and close it again. Most of the 7 seconds is taken up with the interviewer talking. |

Marcia, I apologise. Certain was I that my recollection of the Wogan interview was correct, I searched through a large collection of old video tapes, connected my decrepit vcr, blew the dust off all and watched it again. There is no evidence of Paul talking with closed eyes. My mental faculties must be failing, unless he does it during his interview with Annie Nightingale on the 'Old Grey Whistle Test'. I shall have to search some more. __________________ "You cannot now

If there was someone on the board who has the technical capabilities to transfer video tape to digital I would gladly give up these treasures so everyone could share. If not I will try to transcribe them. __________________ "You cannot now

I just bought a device recently that transfers VHS to digital. It cost less than A$50 inc postage. __________________ How do I explain my devotion to God and the Angel Garfunkel at his right hand. |

Reply with quote | #19 | I would love to transer digital to VHS, is there such a device? I don't like digital , not as a camcorder anyway and would rather make all my movies into tapes.

I have the 1980 'Old Grey Whistle Test' interview on audio and would be glad to borrow a vhs copy to transfer onto digital. Paul appeared twice on 'Wogan' -'86 & '91. I have both interviews and you can view some of the content on my Youtube account, Ellgee82. Sue Lawley covered for Terry Wogan on the second appearance and some of the interview I view with a cringe. Lawley persists on calling Paul a workaholic and Paul gets very defensive. You can also view some of Art's appearance with Sue Lawley in 1988 - 'Paul Simon's music -1970 to 1972'. Art is licking his lips because they haven't given him any water to drink - this one is quite funny! Paul appeared on the BBC Saturday morning childrens programme 'Going Live' on his birthday. Some of this you can also view on my Youtube when Paul McCartney phones in. __________________ Well, it’s just after breakfast, I’m in the road and the weatherman lied. |

I expect the device I got may do that too, but I'm not sure. As it only arrived the other day, I haven't set it up, and now I'm back at uni, so probably won't have time until next semester break. __________________ How do I explain my devotion to God and the Angel Garfunkel at his right hand. |

The problem for many folks is that Australia, Japan and USA are NTSC format and the UK and much of the rest of the Europe is PAL. Unless your converter can convert between formats it probably won't work. There are commercial places that can do a digital PAL to NTSC conversion (and vice versa) relatively cheaply - something like 10 USD. My equipment can play back PAL DVD's but not PAL VHS. __________________ "Never criticize the post office - they might just figure out where you live." Les Barker |

My computer manual says (I think) it will play any format dvd but only for a certain number of times (6 maybe) and then the last played format will be the only format available. |

The difficulty is more to do with video tapes, which come in NTSC and Pal formats and then converting these to DVD (Pal or NTSC). I kinda assumed that PaulS was from the UK therefore it would be straight forward for me to convert Pal vhs tapes to DVD Pal or NTSC. Hopefully Royd can confirm this.

I can't access a DVD hack site at the moment so I'm not sure how informative they are - but my experience of DVD players is, the cheaper, the better. Cheaper, less sophisticated players usually play both formats anyway. The more expensive the player the more restrictions have been installed. This doesn't mean I'M cheap though!

Reply with quote | #29 | I agree - I always have very cheap players too. All region, and the only ones who'll play on my old TV/video-combination.

Reply with quote | #30 | You still have a different format in Europe? I can remember if I bought any CD's, that make sure they will play in the states and sometimes they only had the other kind. At least I 'm glad I knew that.
